Freedom Film Fest

Joint Press Conference with Suaram and KOMAS announcing the Freedom Film Fest 2011
March 22nd, 2011

Seven years ago, KOMAS’ FREEDOM FILM FEST (FFF) was held in a small college hall in Kuala Lumpur with NGO activists, friends, family and a few walk-in public members as audience.

Today it is pretty much the same, except the hall is bigger, a lot more NGOs, friends, family and general public members are participating. And most significant of all, the Penang & Selangor State governments are our co-sponsors.

This has been the journey of the FFF, the first and only human rights film festival in Malaysia. All throughout the year we hold community film screenings, film proposal competition, road shows, workshops and finally the premier screenings of the winning films in 4 cities and towns in Malaysia.

KOMAS will once again collaborate with the Penang State Government and local human rights NGO, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) Penang. This strategic collaboration will definitely enhance human rights education and advocacy among Penangites.

A joint press conference was held on the 22nd of March 2011 at Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (KOMTAR) by the Penang State Government together with KOMAS and SUARAM Penang to officially announce the call for entries for the FFF proposal writing competition.

Y.B. Wong Hon Wai, the State Exco member for Arts and Culture, affirmed the Penang State Government’s support for creative human rights based activities such as the FFF. He also urged Malaysians to send in their proposals based on SUARAM’s Annual Malaysian Human Rights Report. The report is a compilation of human rights cases and situations in Malaysia.

Anna Har, FFF advisor and KOMAS Board member gave a background of why FFF was established and what KOMAS wanted to achieve in terms of advocating for human rights in Malaysia through the use of the film medium

Lee Hui Fei of Suaram Penang felt that the FFF is a good and effective way to reach out to young people. She added that as local partners of the FFF in Penang, they will be organising film screenings of previous years’ FFF winning films in various colleges and communities.

FFF Coordinator Rekka Chinnasamy, and Programme Officer Fabian Mark Peter gave more details about the film proposal competition and also about other activities of the Festival. A short trailer of the FFF and the recent launching in Kuala Lumpur was also screened for the invited media.
